Default Croatian Extradited for Retrial in Police Killing

A Croatian man extradited from Australia will be retried by a local court in September on charges of killing a police chief at the start of Croatia's independence war in 1991, the state news agency Hina reported.

The trial of Antun Gudelj, 59, who was flown to Croatia by Interpol on Sunday, will be held in the eastern town of Osijek, Hina said on Monday.

He is accused of shooting dead Osijek police chief Josip Reihl-Kir, who favoured dialogue with local Serb rebels, and two Serb officials at a checkpoint close to the territory held by the rebels.

Many believe the incident seriously damaged relations between Croatia and the local Serb minority opposed to independence.

Gudelj, at the time a reserve policeman guarding the checkpoint, fled abroad when he was indicted but was arrested and brought back to Croatia in 1994.

He was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment but was pardoned in 1997 under an amnesty and moved to Australia.

His case was reopened in 2001, after the Supreme Court overturned his amnesty and ordered a re-trial.
