Zagreb- The Adriatic coast of Croatia is on fire, six firemen were killed due to a change of wind. The fire brigade were trying to put out the flames on the island Kornati, when the wind changed direction and the flames surrounded them. Another 19 were injured, two very seriously.
"This is the worst tragedy that ever hit the Croatian fire brigade" premier Ivo Sanader said when visiting the injured in hospital. "We will do all we can to determine what caused the fires. We already have a group of suspects. We will find the ones responsible a will punish them harshly". Over a thousand fires have devastated tens of thousands of hectares of vegetation along the coast. The fires were started by pyromanias in dry and hot conditions. The commander of the Sibenik fire brigade protested: the firemen have been exposed to danger without any motive. "It is a national park" he said, "but the fire didn't threaten any people. It was not the case to put their lives at risk". Meanwhile the fires in Greece are almost under control, mainly due to less wind, non of the fires that killed 63 people is still threatening inhabited regions.
