65 Kilos of Heroin seized in Croatia

Croatian police arrest four people smuggling 65 kilos of heroin when a truck carrying fruits tried to enter this East European country.

The heroin's value on the street market has been estimated at $3.5 million, the Croatian Web site vijesti.net reported.

The drugs were put in 120 packages and hidden under the seats of the driver and his co-driver. The heroin was being shipped on the regular Balkan route leading from Turkey, via Bulgaria and Serbia to Croatia on its way to Western Europe.

The amount confiscated on Wednesday, added to the 12 kilos found over the last 15 days is more heroin than has been uncovered in Croatia during all of 2007, DPA reported.

The police have not as yet commented on whether the Croatian company that owned the truck would face criminal charges.

Croatian police said they arrested four Croatian nationals and seized 143 pounds of heroin when a truck transporting fruits tried to enter the country.

Croatian customs and police officers Monday stopped the Croatian truck after it crossed from Serbia into Croatia at the Bajakovo border check point, Marijan Benko, Croatian police chief told reporters in Zagreb Wednesday.
